We can do amazing things with old nine-volt batteries. But, please do first ask an adult to confirm the batteries are flat, and there is no visible damage. Oh yes and one more thing. Do avoid touching the terminals together, just in case there is sufficient current left to cause a spark. The first of the cool things about old 9V batteries is we can take them apart.
The Second of the Cool Things about Old 9V Batteries
The second unusual thing about nine-volt batteries is there is something we can safely use inside. Moreover we can take them apart because they contain a number of individually sealed cells.
As long as we don’t tamper with these, we should be okay. Here are the steps to opening up an old 9V battery that has gone completely, or almost flat.
- Clip the corners at the top of the case at the end where the terminals are
- Using pliers, peel down the sides clipping the corners as you go
Please take care, as the cut edges are sharp. It’s quite okay to start at the bottom end if you find this easier. When the case is open, allow the contents to drop to your work surface. Now take up a pair of insulated side cutters.
- Snip the wires joining the battery snap pad to the cells, at the battery ends
That’s it! You have dismantled your first 9V battery. Now, repeat the process with several more batteries.
The Third of the Cool Things about Old 9V Batteries
Pick up two battery snap pads you removed and clip them together by aligning the positives to the negatives.
The third of the cool things about old 9V batteries is these pads make a mighty strong connection.
In fact, you might even need a flat screwdriver blade to prize them apart. So, what can you with this knowledge? The answer is at least three things. Just wait until you see this video. You will be surprised.
