The Green Living Show in Toronto is the host of many different awards and one of them is the Canadian Green Car Award! This year marked the 5th anniversary for the award which many are happy about as the “green category” of cars has finally been recognized. No, this is not an award given to the most beautifully green car… It is an award, however, that is given to green cars and the “green” in this context means the most environmentally friendly.

The Chevrolet Bolt was declared as the official overall winner of this year’s award on April 7th, 2017! This is the second consecutive year for Chevrolet and it is no surprise. One of the most prominent features of the Chevrolet Bolt is that it can go the distance of 383 kilometers without needing to recharge! It also doesn’t hurt that it looks great while doing so!

Additionally, it seems as though Chevrolet might be after the prize for next year as well!

The GCCA

The Canadian Green Car Award is an award put in place by Eric Novak, also known as “Enivro Dad”, Michael Bettencourt and Peter Gorrie from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) to provide the best available options for those wanting a green car. The results are determined by a highly professional team made up by the AJAC. They also procure the results by test driving and using the cars to ensure their safety and efficiency. In addition, The winning standards rise higher each year to ensure cars and companies are keeping up to date with the latest and “greenest” technologies.

Qualifications

To be qualified, you need to make a green car that is the most innovative in one of six categories: 1) Zero Emissions, 2) Plug-in hybrid, 3) Conventional Hybrid, 4)Efficient Gasoline or Diesel Internal Combustion, 5) Efficient Family Car, & 6) Fun Car. The judges pick the winners for each category based on their fuel efficiency, production process, emissions, price, “green” features and mass-market appeal as they believe the more green cars sold, the bigger the impact.
