Did you know that Earth day falls on Saturday, April 22nd this year? Well, it does and that means the whole weekend is declared earth weekend! In its honour, there are many initiatives set in place to educate people about the environment and the earth. The city of Ajax in the Durham region is one of the many cities across Canada who are passionate about living green. In fact, its initiative for this Earth day weekend even has the name of “Green Living Days” and it runs from the 20th of April to the 23rd.

What are they doing you ask? Well, check out the dates below for the details about the events!

April 20th

The first day of “Green Living Days” will be jam-packed with many interesting events! They will include:

  • Tree plantings next to the Ajax Cricket Club grounds. These are located south of the Ajax Community Center. The cool thing about this activity is that school children from the surrounding area will get to participate as well! They will do this in two different sessions happening in the morning and the afternoon. This way, everyone gets to participate! When children get to actively participate in a green activity, it raises their awareness and makes them more interested and involved!
  • The next event will be a new addition that will raise awareness about climate change in the form of a mini-symposium from 6pm-9pm. This min-symposium will take place at the St. Francis Centre on 78 Church St. S. This is an event that is in partnership with the Ajax-Pickering Trade board and it will include presentations from University of Waterloo students and others!
  • After the mini-symposium, a screening of the documentary “Before The Flood” directed by Leonardo DiCaprio will take place.

April 21st

After a full day of learning about the earth and the environment, we know you’ll be tired. We also know that you do not want to miss any exciting Earth day activities. Therefore, Friday will only have a 20 min event that is all about clearing the community of all litter! It starts at 2pm and it will need the help of the whole community so be sure to be there!

April 22nd

The 22nd will be a special day as the community will plant 1000+ trees to honor veteran heroes and the Highway of Heroes! This event is a part of the Honda Canada Foundation and it will take place at Miles Park from 10am to 1pm. This one should definitely be at the top of your list as it honors the earth and the fallen heroes!

April 23rd

On the final day of the “Green Day Living” initiative, the Ajax Meadow will host an Ajax Meadow Maintenance Workshop. It will include mulching, weeding and planting wildflowers to provide pollen for butterflies and bees. This workshop will start at 10pm and it will go on until 1pm so make sure you don’t miss it!

All events are free but some will require registering before hand. For more information or to register, visit www.ajax.ca.

Do you live in the Durham district? Will you be attending any of these events? Do you have any cool initiatives you want to tell us about? Please let us know in the comments below!
