Batteries have become an indispensable part of our lives, on account of the devices they power. We think of smartphones, and the portable computers we call laptops. And the lead-acid batteries that start our auto’s every morning. There have been many heroic rescues involving batteries too.
Heroic Rescues Involving Batteries and Hikers
Take the drama surrounding 24-year-old Batel Rosenkrantz, for example. She decided to climb Mount Karioi on her own. This was a bad combination. Batel was a tourist from a dry, arid country called Israel. The extinct Karioi volcano is on New Zealand’s South Island where it rains for at least ten days every month. And the vegetation is dense.
Batel Rosenkrantz reached the 756-meter summit by 2:20 p.m., after hiking for over four hours. “It was really muddy and it’s coarse and bushy,” she told the media.
“Even on the narrow track there is bush all over and it’s hard to see five meters.” After she rested for five minutes, she looked for the trail, but missed it. Within ten minutes, she realized she had lost the trail.
There were multi-colored markings all over the place, but she did not know what these meant. When night fell, she decided to call the police. However, her cell phone had been on all day draining the battery. She was horrified to discover she had only 7% left. Fortunately, the police were able to download her GPS coordinates. Another historic battery rescue was about to unfold.
The Dramatic Rescue of Young Batel Rosenkrantz
The temperature on Mount Karioi in May varies between 12º C in the daytime, to 2º C at night. As it became steadily colder, Batel followed police advice. She held her phone close to her body to preserve its battery energy.
Ten hours later, one of three rescue teams with a dog found her. They made a fire and bunkered down for the night. The next morning, the young woman caught her first helicopter ride. This added yet another success to the long list of heroic rescues involving batteries.
