It’s that time of the year! And I don’t just mean ’tis the season for holidays but for also Solar Splash!
While the competition days are in June, which seems far away from now, the next few months are still important as that when all the work is done! June is just for showing off the final products and their abilities, the real work is done before that! Before we keep babbling on, let’s give you a little introduction about the competition….
What’s It All About?
Solar Splash is an event that brings together colleges from the U.S mostly but also from abroad. It requires the colleges and their teams to build solar boats that must undergo a series of challenges to bran one a winner! The goal of the competition is to find the teams that can best exploit the sun in a small watercraft. The duration of the event is five days during typically the second week of June! Its purpose is testing workmanship, endurance, speed and resourcefulness. There will be multiple races/challenges as well. These include the Solar Slalom, the Solar Endurance and a 300 meter race.
History
SOLAR SPLASH began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1994. Marquette University hosted the event. However, the competition’s location moved all over the states to places such as New Orleans, Buffalo, Arkansas, then Dayton and Springfield, Ohio to spark interest from different states.
The last year’s winner was Cedarville and that was their 18th time winning!
This year, there’s many new teams such as the Sherbrooke Hyperion team from Canada!
We’re very excited to be working with the Solar Splash Inc. this year and we wish all the teams the best of luck!
