As mentioned in a recent post, the Hayden Robotics team is back and better than ever! In a little interview we did with two members of the team, we got to know some more about the hopes and plans plus some lessons from last year that the team learned about.
Some Info on The Team:
The Hayden Robotics Team is from Burlington’s Dr Frank J. Hayden High School and this is their second year in the First Robotics competition. The team is composed of 50 brilliant students. Also, it is divided into 5 sub-teams: design, electrical, mechanical, business and marketing.
Lessons From Last Year:
Our first interviewee is Corbin Garlough, one of the senior students who was part of the team last year. Corbin says that the communication between the different teams is an area of needed improvement as last year, he says: “we realized that some of our parts [for the robot]would interfere with electrical wiring and controllers. If we had talked to each other more we wouldn’t have run into this”. Therefore, better communication is one of their main focuses this year especially since there are 50 members!
Our second interviewee, Tasnim, who is also a senior and who has been on the team before provided us with some information on their future plans for the First Robotics competition.
Plans For First Robotics 2017-2018
For pre-season, Tasnim says that they are getting the new members more “acquainted with basic information needed for each sub-team.” For example, in the programming sub-team, ” the students are working on learning Java from tutorials and worksheets made by Loana [another member of the team].” The design sub-team, on the other hand, is working on learning CAD. Electrical, she says “is rewiring our previous robot to make the wiring more organized and efficient.” And Finally, the mechanical sub-team, which she runs with Corbin, is working on introducing the VEX program to the team by prototyping small VEX robots with different purposes. These include tasks such as picking up blocks, climbing stairs, or launching projectiles.
This is so exciting to hear about! We will be writing more about the Hayden Robotics team throughout the year so keep up with our website for more updates!
