The Right Battery Type for Solar Power

Several parameters influence the choice of the right battery type for solar . The main points to consider are technical performance, cost, and dependability of the brand. Plus, of course, whether we can recycle the components for other uses. Here we focus on technical performance of solar batteries.

Choosing a Battery Type for Solar Reliability

Battery Capacity

We compare batteries technically in terms of their capacity, and probable lifespan. Capacity is the amount of electricity they can store, expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Most solar batteries are ‘stackable’ to aggregate the total power. We also need to consider the kilowatt rating (kW) to get the complete picture.

The right combination of kWh and kW is important. High capacity teamed with a low rating provides a small amount of power for a longer period. This might be sufficient to keep a refrigerator and television running. By contrast, a high power rating with a low capacity might be enough for everything, but only for a couple hours.

Discharging Depth & Round Trip Efficiency

Depth of discharge relates to the amount of a battery’s capacity we can actually use. The reason being batteries lose some of their potency if the user lets them discharge completely.

So if a 10 kWh battery has a maximum 90% discharge depth, you actually only have 9 kWh to play with.

The drive for greener batteries brings energy efficiency into sharper focus. Hence round trip efficiency is an important factor when choosing the right battery type for solar power. While we never get out exactly the same amount of electricity we put in when charging. We should strive to get out as close to it as we can.
