Hearing aids do not come cheap if we want something decent. Later we discover how the cost of their batteries stacks up over time. We may have declined the offer of a rechargeable model because at the time, the cost did not seem justified. Fortunately, there are ways of conserving hearing aid batteries without having to spend more money.

No battery lasts forever. This post is about conserving hearing aid batteries a little longer, because even a 5% life extension adds value that accumulates. Hearing aids use zinc-air cells that we also find in cameras. These function by oxidizing zinc stored in them with natural oxygen from the air. This process continues until the zinc runs out.

Zinc-air cells have a long shelf life and remain good for up to three years if their seals are intact. These seals serve the purpose of keeping oxygen away, so the reaction that eventually drains them down, cannot begin. Once open, they go down faster in conditions of high temperature and low humidity. They also don’t like extremely humid conditions.

More Tips for Conserving Hearing Aid Batteries

Now we understand the science, we can follow the manufacturer’s suggestions with more confidence. First and foremost, purchase hearing aid batteries that are fresh as possible. Never remove the plastic tab on the back of a battery until just before you insert it in the hearing aid.

In the interim, store your unopened batteries at room temperature. This is because keeping them in the refrigerator in the hope they last longer has the opposite effect. Always keep batteries away from metallic objects like coins and keys, because these could cause a short circuit just like button batteries. Keep them away from children!

Our final tip for conserving hearing aid batteries longer is to remove, and turn a hearing aid off when not in use. Leave the battery door open to allow any moisture to escape. Never leave a battery connected to a device for a long time while standing idle. It could eventually corrode and damage your hearing aid irreparably.
