Phone batteries are not that expensive if we know where to look. And that’s not always on the original manufacturer website, either. Hence, the question arises why bother about phone battery lifespan at all! The answer probably is because we could find ourselves in a situation where the last few minutes matter. Moreover, every wasted lithium battery is a recycle chore for someone.
Phone Battery Lifespan is Not Forever
As far as we are aware, nothing lasts forever, although paying taxes is a close contender. Even a leading smartphone supplier admits their batteries only last for 300 to 500 cycles.
Moreover, they are worth just 80% of original capacity after 1,000 cycles or so. At this point, we may as well recycle them, because their phone battery lifespan is dwindling fast.
But we could delay this, by reminding lithium batteries of their potential full capacity …
How Lithium Batteries Have Bad Memories
Urban legend is largely true when it advises keeping phone batteries between 20% and 80% of charge generally. However, when we do this all the time, they forget the other 40%.
That’s the capacity between 0 and 20%, and 80 and 100% respectively. Thus it makes sense to remind them by fully charging and discharging them once a month.
This resets the full range of their capacity, and they endure for longer because they remember. When we do so, we ‘re-calibrate’ the battery to register the upper and lower limits of its capacity.
We can compare this to our physical strength, which is always there in theory. Except, when we don’t draw on it our muscles become slack and we no longer have so much energy. About the same applies to phone battery lifespan.
It’s a Walk in the Park Now We Know
Fully charging and recharging lithium batteries is like taking family dogs for a walk in the park, or down to the beach where they can run through the waves. When we do this, they are happier and healthier and may live longer. Remember to exercise your phone battery once a month, and it too should also be your faithful companion for a while longer.
