19 days to go until the big SOLAR SPLASH competition and we’re coming at you with a post about a promising solar boat team: The University of New Mexico (UNM) Solar Boat Team. We want to get to know the team a little bit more before the competition starts! We have previously shared a small glimpse of the team members but today we are going the full length!
The Team’s Story:
The New Mexico Solar Boat Team is Composed of 8 mechanical engineering senior students and 5 undergrad electrical engineering students. The team members are: Daniel Taylor, Cameron Pouncy, Eric Brown, Luis Hernandez, Ally Jackman, Elisabeth Keller, Kevin, McConnell, Christopher Murtagh, Ramon Reyes, Keith Soules, David Diaz, Craig Robertson, Leonardo Rossetti, William Randall Green, James Richards, Ted Sterns. They are directed by UNM’s very own professor Dr. Peter Vorobieff. The team is also New Mexico’s AND UNM’s third time entering the Solar Splash competition.
Team members:
Daniel Taylor: Daniel is a UNM SOLAR SPLASH Instructor, ASME and Pi Tau Sigma member. As the Graduate Legacy Mentor, he has been helping to get everyone moving together in the right direction and staying on task and organized in the many roles each person plays. Daniel helped lead the initial development of the team, including selecting the members and the design of the hull. Daniel is working at Sandia National Laboratories. He is now graduated and is continuing to work while pursuing his master’s degree at UNM.
.
Cameron Pouncey: Cameron is an Electrical Engineering Graduate Mentor. Cameron Pouncey is the team lead for the UNM Solar Splash electrical engineers. Additionally, he is a fourth-year PhD student and the manager of the APERIODIC laboratory. Cameron is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Florida. Cameron also spent 10 years working as an engineer for various defense contractors. His current research focuses on the development of new high-voltage and pulsed-power systems and technologies.
.
Ally Jackman: Ally works as an Energy Engineering Intern at Vibrantcy and is particularly interested in sustainable energy and Biomimicry. She looks forward to getting hands on experience with solar applications and working in a dynamic team. Ally spent time studying in California and returned to New Mexico to have her son. She now lives in Santa Fe and plans to join the workforce after graduation and eventually attain her master’s degree in Biomimicry in the years to come.
.
Ted Sterns: Ted is a senior student in electrical engineering, and the Solar Splash team is his senior design project. His focus is on power and energy systems, and currently he is an assistant to Dr. Cavallo and Vijay Saradhi Mangu researching photovoltaic materials. Upon graduation, he hopes to work for a utility in transmission and station design or at one of the national labs researching the same.
.
David Diaz: David an Electrical Engineering student for Universidad Nacional de Colombia doing an Exchange program at UNM. His main interest is working on renewable energy projects. He intends to come back to UNM for his masters and to keep working on the same field.
