Electric motorcycles have not taken off compared to electric cars. Why is that? Well, for starters they share the same limitations of charge time, battery range, and service infrastructure. Moreover, cars have four wheels and four seats, providing ample space for large batteries under the floor. Motorcycles were at a loss for ideas until the Kymco Ionex Scooter booked a stand at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.
What Makes the Ionex Scooter Different from the Rest?
Kymco is a Taiwan company with a mission to ‘create personal vehicles and steal the hearts of consumers around the world’. Its customers prefer two wheels, and it has a range of scooters, all-terrain vehicles, and a single street bike to set their hearts on fire.
Now it wants to change the way we travel with its all-electric Ionex Scooter commuter bike. But this one is going to stand out from the crowd of e-bikes because it uses drop-in batteries that slot into holders like flashlight cells. Kymco thinks it is onto a good thing. It intends to release 10 different models in the next three years, and sell a total 500,000 globally.
Maintaining Charged Batteries Could be a Walk in The Park
The Kymco Ionex Scooter has a battery case beneath the floor under the rider’s feet, to keep the center of gravity low. A touch of a button opens the cover revealing two 5-Kg removable batteries. Even better, the space under the seat is available for other storage.
Soon it won’t be necessary to have an electric scooter standing idle if you have a spare set of charged batteries under the scooter seat. Moreover, Kymco is planning battery exchange outlets and a network of charging points.
If the batteries go flat at a critical moment, then the Ionex Scooter has a third, core battery permanently installed. This will provide enough juice to go shopping for a battery swap-out store, or a burger and fries while the charging station replenishes the removable ones within an hour.
