Lead-acid auto starter batteries are truly amazing things. Their compact size packs enough power to start a mighty V8 motor. Yet they are also able to feed consistent, gentle power to the most delicate accessories. They truly are at the heart of the pleasures of motoring.
How to Get the Most from Lead-Acid Auto Starter Batteries
Lead-acid auto starter batteries can deliver sterling service for three to five years. However, just like your good self, your family, and the household pet, they do need an annual checkup. Ask your battery dealer to run diagnostics on your lead-acid battery once a year for extra peace of mind.
The commonest reason for batteries going flat prematurely is leaving the lights, or other accessories on without the engine running. However, if the battery fails while the engine is running we may be able to drive as far as the nearest dealer. But, there is a risk attached because the navigation lights and horn are not working. Moreover, the alternator is stressing to the extent the motor could stall.
Warning Signs That Starter Batteries Could Fail
An early sign may be slower engine cranking. This is most likely in the winter, because just like us, batteries are sluggish when it is cold. Lead-acid auto starter batteries may be sending warning signals if some dashboard lights come on irrationally.
Have your starter battery checked, but do view the electrolyte level through the translucent pane first. If your battery starts swelling like it ate too much pasta then it is time to replace it. Especially if you smell ‘rotten eggs’ indicating leaking causing corrosion around the battery connections. Your battery may be due for pensioning off if this happens.
Check the first part of the code on the cover. The alpha is the month, A for January etc.: The numeric is the year, say 5 for 2015. Have your battery checked after 3 years, or sooner if you take frequent, short journeys. If its days are over take it to a battery recycling plant. Then its minerals can begin another journey.
