Never participated in a First Robotics competition? No worries, we got you covered! Today’s post is all about how to make your own team to qualify for First Robotics.

Here are 7 steps detailing how to build a First Robotics team:

Step One: Find Local Support

Your first step is to get familiar with the material! Before joining the competition, you should try to learn as much as you can about it. Afterwards, try and get in contact with your local First advisers. They will be able to help you best as they have the contacts for all of the region’s First participating schools and teams.

Step Two: Find a Coach and Mentor

Before you assemble your team, you will need at least one adult mentor/coach with technical expertise. If you can get more adults mentors, that would help you better with things like fundraising!

Step Four: Build the Team!

Now you need the hands to help you participate in this competition. You will need 20 hands to be precise…or 10 team members in other words. They don’t need to have any technical background, just a general excitement for the competition!

Step Three: Register and Pay

Okay so you have a mentor/coach and you have your team down, the next step is to get your team to be recognized by First Robotics! For this, you need to register your information and pay the fees for the competition. You can do this online and apply to grants and possible discounts!

Step Five: Collect Funds

Local businesses are your best bet for this. Try and recruit as many as possible as you will need a steady flow of income throughout the competition period! Much like Hayden Robotics have done with us!

Step Six: Learn Safety Tips!

This step is mostly for the adults on the team; they need to get familiar with the Youth Protection Program and to watch the safety videos outline for them.

Step Seven: Build the Robot!

Now we’re at the fun step, start building your masterpiece! Make sure to check out the Resource Library provided by First to get all information you need!
