Elon Musk has been playing cat and mouse with the media regarding the release date for his Tesla crossover. The name suggests it will combine characteristics of sports utilities and hatchbacks. He let slip to Mice Times on 25 May 2018 he might launch on March 15, 2019. As a throwaway, he added he liked the idea of imagining a crossover on the Ides of March.
What is Musk Planning for the Ides of March?
We doubt he will do anything as dramatic as taking the competition out, as party rebels did to Julius Caesar in the year 44 BC. However, the Ides of March were a day marked on the Roman calendar as a deadline for settling debts. Which debt is he imagining settling, we wonder?
Do you think Elon Musk is planning to deflect attention from a few recent accidents involving Tesla’s self-driving cars? He was direct and to the point on 15 May 2018, when he berated reporters for “unfairly reporting on mishaps”. Whereas he thought, they should rather focus on opportunities to make roads safer with autonomous vehicles.
A Convincing Product to Deflect Media Thinking?
Elon Musk may be planning to settle a few scores on the Ides of March of 2019. However, he will need a convincing product to deflect media thinking down the lines he wants it to go. Perhaps this is why the release could be a year earlier than first planned.
The original release date was some time in 2020. Mice Times suggests Elon Musk brought it forward “partly due to the failure of the launch of serial production of the most affordable models of the Tesla Model 3.” They expect the Tesla crossover will morph onto the Model X chassis, with a few innovations including two motors. One at the front and one at the rear with differently rated batteries.
