Sherbooke’s Hyperion Solar Boat Team at Solar Splash!

Every year at the UPS Battery Center, we like to write about a few teams competing at the SOLAR SPLASH competition. This year is no exception and the team we’d like to introduce today is none other than the very Canadian Hyperion Solar Boat team from Quebec’s Université de Sherbooke!

What is The Hyperion Solar Boat Team About?

Well first of all, this is a rookie team! Furthermore, it is a Canadian rookie team and we’re very excited that a Canadian team is on board for the SOLAR SPLASH competition! Additionally, this team is made up of 17 highly skilled mechanical and engineering students whose names and roles are listed below:

  • Vincent Côté : Team Captain – Hull  ;    Maxime Denis : Coordinator – Electrics
  • Philippe Gosselin : Treasurer – Solar Panels ; Charles Khazoom : System Design
  • Michel Labrecque : Electronics ; Francis Lacroix : Electronic
  • Lévy Leblanc : Propellers ; Pascal Lévesque : Electronics
  • Jean-Philippe Parent : Transmission ; Sébastien Piché : Motors
  • Jérémy Pichette : Pilot – Hull ; Francis Poirier : Motor controller
  • Raphaël Proulx : Motors; Vincent Reiher : Control System
  • Rami Saintus : Power Management ; Alex St-Jean : Motors
  • Guillaume Arcand : Electronics Integrator; Vincent Tétreault : Sponsorship Manager

Winning Plan?

In order to win the competition, the Hyperion team will design a highly efficient boat and subsystems, including the hull, the propeller, the power train, the solar panels. The team will also aim to beat the competition’s records which are as following :

1. Performing a distance of 27.5 km (17 miles), in 2 hours at the endurance event
2. Travelling  a 300 m (1000 feet) distance in less than 22.4 seconds at the sprint event.
3. Completing the Slalolm race at the minimum speed of 50 km/h.
