What’s Happening?
In an effort to further improve the city and its residences, the City of Toronto is possibly making a deal with the Google Sidewalk Labs to turn part of Toronto’s waterfront into a smart, sustainable, and urban-designed neighborhood. This uniting project is titled the “Quayside”.
Before jumping into the details of the project, we must first explain what Google Sidewalks Labs is.
Google Sidewalk Labs:
So as part of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, Google Sidewalks Labs works to “re-imagine the cities from the internet up” by imagining, designing, testing and building urban cities that better suit our future needs. Their goal is to solve and improve existing infrastructure issues such as the cost of living and energy usage!
The Quayside Project
The Quayside land at the Harbourfront is made up of low-rise office buildings and a whole lot of parking lots. Further developing the Quayside is crucial to other projects surrounding the area such as the flood protection program. The Google project aims to turn 12 acres of waterfront land into a multi-use community using advanced technology, innovative building techniques and funding to encourage “climate-positive urban development.” In addition, 20 per cent of the residential units built will be designated to be affordable. Therefore, it is trying to attract people of different ages and income levels.
